Signals worth a look

Signals with crashes, detector changes, a gap in counts or a large change in volume. A starting point for a closer look, not a verdict.

Why these signals?
  • Fatal/serious crashes: 2 or more fatal or serious injury crashes at the signal, 1 Jan 2021 to 31 Dec 2025 (the last five full calendar years).
  • High crash rate: injury crashes per million entering vehicles in the top 10% of the council's 11 rated signals (0.06 or more), counting only signals with 5,000+ weekday vehicles and 3+ crashes. A rate needs a full year of counts (300+ days) behind it.
  • Detector changes: 2 or more start, stop or shift events in the last 12 months, or any in the last 90 days of the record.
  • OP sheet older: the date printed on the published sheet is earlier than the last detector change, so its layout may be out of date.
  • Silent: no counts for more than 60 days before the end of the record.
  • Mostly faulty detectors: more than 50% of the signal's traffic over its last 12 months was on detectors left out as faulty. Such a signal gets no volume-growth or crash-rate reason, because its volume covers the working lanes only.
  • Volume: 10% or more up or down year on year. Withheld where detectors changed and too little traffic stayed on the loops counted both years.
  • Ranked by crash reasons first, then fatal/serious crashes, then the number of other reasons, then weekday volume. Signals with no reason are not listed.

About this data

What these figures are

Counts come from the vehicle detectors at traffic signals. Weekday volume is the average number of vehicles through a signal on a weekday, and the AM and PM peaks are the busiest hour of the morning and afternoon, each over the signal’s most recent 12 months of counts. Detectors that are faulty are left out. Updated regularly.
